This is a dumb but anoying topic. I'm new to Linux!
I installed mandrake 8.0 with both GNU and KDE...the question is how do I shutdown my PC, I can only find the logoff option. I tried turning it off but it goes through complete checks on the next bootup.
Also, how can I tell which GUI I'm using GNU or KDE?
Thanks

After you logoff there will be some option there to shutdown or restart.
Mandrake 8.0 uses KDE by default, immediately after logging in it will say "KDE starting up" or something like that, should be fairly obvious and your program menu will also have a big K on it :)

First off I think you mean GNOME not GNU. Second of all KDE seems to be the default for Mandrake so your probably using that.

If you configured Mandrake such that X starts automatically after booting (that's what happens, if you use the recommended installation) you should get a dialog window at logoff that has a drop down window where you can choose between reboot and shutdown. Choose shutdown.
If you configured it such that X does NOT start automatically logoff in KDE will drop you to a command line.
In that case, log off as user, log in as root. Type "cd.." and enter. This will bring you to the highest level of the tree. Type "shutdown -". This will show you all possible shutdown options. You need to specify whether you want to kill or restart (k or r). You also need to enter a time option such as "now" of a specific time. But all the options will be indicated.
