Time to toss in my $.02 :)
download managers:
I had one that was not bad but lost it and forgot the name...bad me!
Mozilla has one built in and is more noticable in v1.1
peer to peer programs:
kazza :p no spyware for me, thank you :D
I like gtk-gnutella and giFT was nice also
browsers:
I love Mozilla (use it in Windows also)
Galeon is popular also (built off of Mozilla)
file managers:
Ummm...KDE user, eh?
I like the Gnome default (Nautalis)(sp?)
chat programs:
If they don't have ICQ I don't talk to them :p
GnomeICU is a great clone of ICQ
mail programs:
You mean Evolution right? That's what I use and think it's great.
office programs:
Open Office is what I like, but also use a bunch of odd programs for things...AbiWord is great for Word documents ;)
burning software:
Hands down ECLiPt Roaster (http://eclipt.uni-klu.ac.at/eroaster.php) for me, very well done and easy to use
mp3 software
rippers
Grip, once you figure out all the configuration options, there is nothing you can't do with it
players
XMMS, you should already have it ;)
If you are using KDE (which I think you are - due to Konqueror comment), then I don't recommend using XMMS for streaming audio - i.e shoutcast. Use Noatun instead. I found that XMMS crashed after about 1-2 hours of streaming shoutcast - consistently. I switched back to Noatun and have no problems.
BTW - In the next versoin of KDE (3.1) Konqueror is going to have tabbed browsing like Opera, et al.
I am using Opera for browser until KDE 3.1 (stable) comes out in the fall. (Opera has a download manager built-in)
File Manager: Konqueror - highly customizable
Chat programs: for MSN if you use KDE I highly recvommend Kmess.
Mail: Ximian Evolution
Office: I just use KOffice

for downloads: nt
mp3's: GQmpeg (I like the way the playlist is managed)
Office: I found a bug in the linux 1.0 version that i havn't seen a patch for yet, so i'm sticking Star Office 5.2 for now. Although I'm trying SOT office which seems to be the exact same thing as open office (with a few less file formats supported), without the bug.....But I use Open Office 1.0 in windows. that version runs great.
Browser: Mozilla
Mail: Mozilla mail
