Thanks a lot. BTBGuy 12-31-2000, 12:23 AM Hmm. What're the specs on that laptop? (Reason I ask is that 3.9 is kinda old, wondering if it's feasible to upgrade to 7.1 or something) but that's not what you're asking about! OK, My guess is you'll need to find yourself a null-modem cable (If you don't already have one, make sure the person who sells it to you knows what they're talking about! My cousin and I wasted 2 days trying to get a Mac and a Win95 PC talking to each other for Warcraft II...with the wrong kind of cable!) So! You could also make one yourself (There've got to be plans/pinouts/schematics somewhere on the net for this...) That'll take care of the physical connection. Next step would be to find out everything you can about both ports (WinME and Slack sides) stuff like what IRQ, IO address, what's it called... Now. You'll want to go get a transfer program. My personal preference is Kermit. But I don't know if there's a free Kermit for WinME out there (if it's a version that says something about Win32, it should work on Win95/98/ME/NT4/2K) I know C-Kermit is available on freshmeat.net (http://www.freshmeat.net) for Linux, but you may have to get an older version because I think Slack 3.9 is based on the old libc5 libraries (or maybe older) while 7 and higher use the new (now pretty much standard) glibc libraries. (These are important when you want to compile programs!) Confused yet? So am I. I'm used to transferring stuff using Kermit to and from my Slack 7.1 based laptop to an HP-48GX and HP-49G. You'll want to read up on Kermit (if that's what you decide to use) but you could also use Xmodem/Ymodem/Zmodem programs (don't ask me what they are, I know little more than that they exist...) OK!!! Kermit stuff you'll probably want to set the Windows comp up as a Kermit server (not as bad as it sounds, just tell it the right ports and stuff and type something like "server" at the prompt...) IMPORTANT NOTE! I realize I'm not exactly telling you what to do here, you'll have to take a look at the help files for Kermit/whatever program you use to find the right commands and stuff to set things up. Here's the basic scenario I picture: WinME machine w/ transfer proggie Slack3.9 laptop w/ transfer proggie Connect the two with the null-modem cable (serial ports) start the transfer proggies tell the proggies what port to look at tell them what speed and all that other good stuff tell one to receive stuff and the other to send it! I know it's really long, and I ramble a lot, but I hope this mess of pottage helps! ------------------ --- BTBGuy Bob? Bob? I know no Bob! I'm Larry-boy! Who are you? justlinux.com
