Hi

I'm new to Solaris an am having major trouble setting up my cable modem. I can ftp to my ISP (Telstra) but when I try to ping say yahoo this error message comes back:

ICMP Communication Administratively Prohibited from Gateway
10.192.48.1 for icmp from Spike(My hostname) (144.136.130.69) to w2.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.71.81)

I have no idea what is wrong. I have set up /etc/nsswitch
adding the line "hosts: files dns"

I have set up the /etc/hosts file and my ISPs DHCP server adds in my IP address. I edited /etc/rc2.d/S72inetsvc so that my ISP wouldn't change my hostname to unknown. And I did all the standard things listed at http://www.rite-group.com/consulting/solaris_dhcp.html

Thanks you for any help you can offer

Kris

Hi Kris,

I take it that you are not able to load a webpage? I am assuming that you are running you box straight to the cable modem and not on a LAN or to a gateway router correct?

The message you get sounds like you hit a router that is blocking ICMP or ping requests. It is not that uncommon for Admins to block icmp requests on routers through access lists or a Proxy setup. I would make sure that the issue isn't one of DNS. You are able to ftp which is good and means that your protocol stack is in order and it seems that you have a valid IP address. Have you tried adding the IP address of a website into the web browser you are using instead of the domain name? also check the preferences of the browser and make sure it isn't set to connect to a specific Proxy. What browser are you using? Mozilla? Please let us know some more info and see what we can do for you.

It sounds like it's definitely an issue with a gateway between you and the server.

If you can't ping anything, a gateway is definitely blocking pings.
