which version would you say has advanced the most so far (in terms of easy install, hardware set up etc.)

I installed Gentoo with minimal problems.
:D As far as hardware support, you get source code for the kernel, so you have to compile the support you need. It's source code based. :D

See the Gentoo documentation site (http://www.gentoo.org/index-docs.html). They have a much better explanation than I could give. Read the Portage Manual, the USE Variable HOWTO and the Gentoo Linux CD Installation Guide thoroughly before beginning. Emerge mc and links first to make the command line a little easier.

Gentoo is very easy to install as long as you follow the installation instructions.
What drivers are you looking for? During the Gentoo install, you also compile the kernel. That is where you select what hardware support you require.
