Alex Cavnar, aka alc6379 08-03-2002, 11:33 PM Not that I know of. However, I recommend vim, and others recommend emacs for text editing. Some other good ones I've heard people using are pico, and joe, both of which are kind of close to edlin. AdaHacker 08-04-2002, 09:51 AM I'm not aware of a port for edlin, but if you want a line editor, you can always use ed, which is what vi is based on. Of course, why anyone would want to use a line editor is beyond me, but whatever floats your boat. Lorithar 08-04-2002, 02:46 PM Aaaauuuuuugghhhhh more editor wars. (jed ... works fer me) MarcRochkind 08-05-2002, 01:06 AM As for why one would want to use a line editor... One would use a line editor if the terminal is acting up, or the terminfo data is wrong or unavailable, or if the environment is set wrong, etc., etc. Also, unlike with a screen or GUI editor, you can easily pipe text commands to ed (from a script, say). This is also possible with the screen or GUI editors, but is way more complicated. The line-editor counterpart of vi is, as I recall, ex. But good-old ed is still there. It's way better than edlin. Apparently I forgot how to proof read. dunbar 08-06-2002, 12:36 PM Not bloody likely you'd find M$ source code for edlin anywhere in the public realms, never mind finding said source code anywhere close to a Linux box!! I suspect the Linux box would first explode (by rights it should explode: Tux has a measure of pride and the local Linux box would likely chew on a 'cyanide' tablet in an act of self preservation). justlinux.com
