I have a THinkPad with Windows ME that I'm trying to boot up with Linux also. The version I'm installing is Red Hat 7.3. I need to use rawwrite but my comp doesn't have a floppy drive. As far as I know, I can't boot off the CD drive. I do have an external zip attached but I'm not given the option to choose it in the scroll down menu in rawwrite. WHat do I do? Assuming I could scrape up the money for a 3.5 floppy for the boot disk, would an external work?

Its been awhile since I have used a thinkpad but I believe that you can boot from floppy. And that would be the easiest if you can't boot from CD.
I have not tried this so I can't say if it is possible but if you created a CD install floppy disk and then copied to the HD (via CD or zip drive). You might be able to start the linux installer from DOS or use the loadlin program.

Not sure if this is the real DOS or just a command prompt within Windows (like in XP), but in "Run" type in "cmd" or "command"

Its an MS DOS Prompt. And Its not in real mode. An errot message appears saying this version of Windows doesn't support the real mode dos. I'm at a loss right now. I'm still not sure if I would be able to boot from an external floppy.

Nope, WinME does not have DOS at all, the command prompt is a psudeo-shell. They did a really good job getting rid of DOS from ME...there is a hack out there to enable it, but when I tried it...it fscked my system...
Can you get a Win98 boot floppy disk? That is what I use when I need it...
