I bought a Zoom External 56K FAXMODEM Model number 2949. A link I followed from redhat.com said this modem is ok for Linux. I have it on COM 1 and it will not work. When searching for a modem the lights light up and then it goes to the window that shows modems found and nothing is there. I set it manually in the PPP configuration window and it still does not call. Sometimes it says already connected and other times says Unable to activate interface. What do I do?
Thanks

Your using Gnome?
I never really liked the way it connected to the internet. Try using wvdial, I find it to be one of the more reliable means of connecting.

Just open up a new console and type wvdial
you'll need to run wvdialconf to create a configuration file first though.

Well, I am on the Net using Linux! I switched over to KDE and used KPPP and had no probs.
Now it's off to General Questions...
Thanks

I have been using an Zoom external 56k modem for a couple of years (model 2948L) and have it working with RH7. Previous to RH7 I used KDE and Kppp to connect. With RH7 I switched to Gnome. With RH7 and Gnome Redhat packages the RH PPP Dialer. When you first run it you step through Dialup Configuration which will create the wvdialconf file (RH PPP Dialer is just a front end to wvdial). This process is a little finicky and may not create a good wvdialconf file (I found myself manually editing the created file). If you find yourself needing to run Dialup Configuration a 2nd time you are best off deleting your previously created wvdialconf file.
