In Slackware 7.1, when I run PPPSetup, it asks for my isp's DNS server address and DNS hostname. Is it ok to enter nothing for the DNS hostname? And how can I enter more than one DNS nameserver ip?
Thanks

It is most definitely not O.K. to leave the DNS server entry empty. This is what you use to translate web addresses...

I did. I switched. I loved apt-get but before I start using tools that will do it all for you, I wanted to have to compile things myself etc.
But, is the DNS Hostname still needed if you enter ip addresses?

Once you switch over to the Darkside, I can not help you. </KIDDING>
I actually have a Slack 7 partition, I'm just trying to get my Debian up and running correctly first....
I'm not sure about the DNS question, someone else will have to jump in on that one.

Ok, now I have a problem. It worked once or twice but now I get this:
root@darkstar:/home/Mike# ppp-on
root@darkstar:/home/Mike# Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
Or this:
root@darkstar:~# ppp-on
root@darkstar:~# Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
Remote message: Password validation failure
PAP authentication failed
Connection terminated.
All the info is correct! What can cause this error? It seems that I can never get my internet connections to be as reliable as in windows!

Forgot to mention, I put the resolv.conf file like this:
nameserver 194.73.73.94
nameserver 194.73.73.95
and in the pppsetup.txt file where it was so it worked (I think)

Nope, you won't need a DNS entry for merely entering IP addresses. However, you should be able to find a DNS to use somewhere!

What do you mean?
I think my ppp connection with pppsetup may be a little messed up, if there a NHF or a HowTo or something on how to setup a pppsetup connection with more than one dns ip address?
Thanks

ARGH! It won't work! I've played around with it. I *THINK* the dns settings are right, but it says PAP Authentication failed! Everything is right though! What can I do?

Well, I would start by making sure that your ISP isn't using CHAP instead of PAP, since you're -positive- the username/password combo is correct. Also, remember (as I'm sure you do) that Linux is case-sensitive, so make sure that you've got the PW right with regards to that. Good luck! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Damnit! My mistake, it WAS CHAP and not PAP! I've been using PAP to get on since this summer too! Weird cos sometimes it actually worked!
Anyway, Slack rocks, Netscape sucks and pppsetup works!
