i have linux mandrake v.7.2. if i install KDE, i can connect to the internet successfully using KPPP. but if i use GNOME, when i start Gnome PPP, and connect, it says "dailing" and then immediately gives a message saying "pppd daemon died unexpectidly". i started linuxconf and configure ppp from there and tried to connect from linuxconf itself, but still the connection did not establish. nothing went to the modem, it did not even dial. can anyone help?

I have been able to connect to the net using just about every "utility" available... except GNOMEppp. The only thing I haven't done is retrieved a back issue of Max. Linux Magazine I offered my brother-in-law (in another state) that had a great PPP How-to and included setting up GNOMEppp.
It is frustrating, isn't it?
I just connect via command line now... always. Much more consistent. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Same problem here. I have the feeling GnomePPP just sucks, but that's just my opinion.

Try doing a search on LNO for this problem.
It has been covered in much detail. Use setserial as a keyword. And look at http://www.unionbuiltbox.com/modem.htm
--------------edit-------------
eliminate the hardware first - e.g. set up the modem. (if not already done) then look @ the software.

noauth is already present in the options file
