Im a little used to redhat but a buddy of mine just brought over me a copy of solaris 8. A four cd set, but im not so sure i can dive in and use it. Is it hard to use? Better to use? Im still on the newbie side of linux too. Any suggestions other than to send the disc's to you?

solaris is a very nice OS but if your new to linux I'd really recommend staying away right now. Basicly the X display is nothing but blank screen with some confussing tool bars on the bottom.

solaris may more of a pain i the *** to install if you computer. It doesn't support alot of x86 hardware.(newer stuff). The install itself is all graphical and straight forward. Sun starts with a windowmanager and isnt much for CLI. After using linux you may find it boring, but it is very powerful and actually not much different than redhat.

not much use for an end user as its designed for server use.

if you can master it then i envy you

It is good also for the cli, most functions can be completed much quicker on the command line in solaris. IT doesn't support much hardware on the x86 side, and it feels kind of out of place on the intel platform but it is art in action on a sparc. The windowmanager you will use is CDE and it is pretty plain but functional. It is more designed for server use imo, but I know of several large firms that use it for desktops.
