Ghostscript, LPR, GIMP, Samba, CUPS, LPD, PDQ.....

I'm getting more than a little confused with what I am meant to be using/installing for my printer to work. I don't know what half of these do, let alone what I should get.

I have an Epson Stylus color 440 connected to a Win98 machine. My linux box is smbmounted to the winbox. Now I want to be able to use the printer from the linux box.

Can anyone advise please? There's so many tools/configs Im getting lost.

thanks

Stick to CUPS is the best advice. It can handle all the others.

Samba is not a driver. It is a way of allowing Windoze machines to connect to a GNU/Linux machine ans use its resources (disk space and printers). If you have a mixed network, it is well worth using.

Printing under linux is something I've never atttempted to get working, mainly coz I've never needed it.

However, I've heard good things about CUPS, and although I don't know too much about it, I'm led to believe its the Way Forward. Its worth downloading it and reading every single bit of information you can find in there on how to get it working.
