i'm currently running redhat7 and quite a newbie. i understand that X is a server and hence should allow me to start it remotely? furthermore, can i startx in windows? the reason is that i want to be able to graphically control my linux box from windows on a network. can this be done? if so, how? any guides? thanks

I don't think thats possible through a telnet session (like I assume you are doing). I've never been able to do it anyway.
I think you would need a X server for windows in order to make this work.

If you have the money, the Hummingbird's eXceed is one great product.
If not, then try VNC (vncviewer for Windows and vncserver for Linux). I don't have the url handy so either search for VNC at freshmeat.net, search the forums here as it has been posted on a regular basis or perhaps someone else with a better memory than me can post the link.

You can just run a search for VNC on (where else?) Google. You can hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button, because you want the first result.
 Google

Configure XDMCP and use XWin32, That combination kicks *** for an Xwindows terminal in Windows!!

Heres a quick XDMCP howto link it should still work (its on documentation I keep scattered through 4- 2 inch binders, If the documentation is helpful I print it out and put in these binders for quick access in the event I need it again)
http://linuxbin.com/cgi-bin/ldpdisplay.cgi?XDMCP.html
Here where to get Xwin32 to try http://www.starnet.com/products/

VNC is a simple free little tool to control the desktop of a remote machine just like PC Anywhere or Laplink its kinda a slow even on a 100m network (I run VNC on all my NT servers at work so my lazy *** doesnt have to move from my desk)
XDMCP is an actual multiuser terminal environment just like any other unix terminal based system yet with xwindows functionality. And if setup right is smoother than an ICA client.
Draw Backs
Sometimes tricky setup
Need the client side which you usually have to pay for or acquire through other means (as mentioned before eXceed, or Xwin32)
