I was wondering how to configure pidentd or get it running for Mandrake 8.2. I looked at the man pages and searched the net, but all of these things are centered around the inetd.conf file. I don't have that. Instead i have xinetd.conf, identd.conf, and a folder xinetd. In my user/sbin folder, i also have identd and in.identd. In another thread on this forum, someone got identd working by executing the latter files, but i don't know how to do that other than clicking on it(sorry i'm a former Windows user, but i am getting better:) ) If i could get away with just executing them, rather than configuring them, that would be great. It's not a firewall problem because i installed iptables after i installed and tried out pidentd.
2)I would like to start the daemon when i need it and stop it when i am done with IRC. What are the commands to do this?
Thank you in advance for any help.
:p

You can usually stop, start, restart daemons using

/etc/rc.d/init.d/[service] start|stop|restart

Is pidentd in /etc/rc.d/init.d?

Mandrake's directory structure may be different from my distro (Caldera).

Thank you so much for the help. Ok, i got identd running, yet i am still being autokilled. I did manage to log on to DALnet twice though. I noticed that when DALnet couldn't find my hostname, it will log me on. But, if it does find my hostname, it autokills me. I logged into Windows to see if it was my problem and not DALnet's and i had no problems logging into DALnet there. Any suggestions?

Sorry I don't. I have no idea what DALnet is.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
