for irc I use x-chat (http://www.xchat.org/).

I tend to use irssi in Linux (I'm not sure where you get it, it came with my distro), but now I mostly use mIRC running in wine which runs pretty much perfectly, since I haven't yet found an IRC client for Linux that lets me customise the fonts like mIRC does.

I like XChat MUCH better than mIRC, I suggest it.

irssi is great for text mode stuff though

Well, XChat is okay, but I couldn't find out how to change the font (I don't really like the fixed width fonts for chatting) and a background image for the chat window would also be nice too (Another thing I liked about mIRC).

Also, there seems to be a strange problem where XChat just kills itself if I stretch the chat window over a certain size (About half the screen) preventing me from running it maximised...

Settings => Setup => Channel Windows
