Hello everyone,

All right. What is a good Mp3 ripper? I've been tryin' to use Grip, and I tell it encode into a Mp3, it just burns into to a .ogg file. =(

Suggestions, or do you need more details?

Thanks,
Ali

Seems like you only have Ogg as the actual encoder with GRIP.

You need LAME or BLADEENC encoders with GRIP.

get LAME encoder here (http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/)

ogg sounds better than mp3 and everything supports it.

Did you install lame? If so, change the encoder to lame and it will do both. It is the better encoder also.

I personally use GOGO, since I encode to high-bitrate (256kbps).

Guys,

I have lamed installed and everything, but it still encodes in it. =(

I'm also having a problem with X-CDRoast wn't let me burn from the HD. =( It says MSofs can't read it right. I have everything latest up to date.

Thanks,
Ali

why do you want to use mp3's anyway? Have you even considered using oggs? As mentioned above; they're better than mp3's; not to mention they're a royalty-free open standard.

But.. you said you installed lame. did you actually tell Grip to use lame?

ripperX is far nicer than grip which has been a royal pain in the arse for me in the last few months. RipperX handles the same encoders and offers everything in a mich nicer package.

oh and if you are only listen to these on a computer oggs are the way to go. But if you are using them in a rio or something like that i dunno if those handle oggs.

Guys,

All right. I tried that XRipper, but it crashed on me and it won't restart. =( Well, XMMS crashes are refeuses to play Ogg files anyways even if I try it, or anytihng like that.

Yes, I did tell it to use Lame.

I'm still havin' that dilemma with CD-XRoast. No idea why.

A reminder:

If you launch an application from an x terminal, the error messages will show up in the terminal and you may see what is wrong by seeing the error messages..

But that depends on what you are listening to...Dance music is great in ogg but I still prefer mp3's for what I like...Metal and Rock :D

Unless your steaming custom audio files, mp3's are still a viable option...

I still can't get it, and I have everything installed right. It just goes to ogg files. =(

This is startin' to make me wonder here. *Sniff, sniff*

LOL, Now I know why my last rip's don't work!!

Are you setting the the options correctly? Grip has tons of options that are easy to miss and barried in sub-listings...

Go through all your settings and make sure you don't have .ogg anywhere (I'll have to check which one it is specificly later, late night for me) but I think it is under the RIP options near the bottom?

Madhi,

Not that I can see. =( I have all the options correctly far as I know. =)

Thanks,
Ali

not to change the subject, but I think oggs sound cleaner regardless of the type of music. The test I used was metal (chevelle-mia) and it definitely sounded better. mp3s have a bit of a "darker" sound than oggs, but they're also not as clean.

Alistair:
I know you're more interested in burning mp3s, but what version of XMMS are you using? If it's crashing every time you try to play oggs, you've got other problems. Also, have you tried using bladeenc, instead of lame. I've had success with bladeenc..

fancypiper: ? could you be a little more clear? Maybe I'm estupido, but I didn't notice anything directly on that page having to do with the problem.

:o Excuse the poor memory. :o When ogg first came out, I had a dim memory that lame had a switch to choose between the two, but after I read the docs myself, I found out the answer to all the questions on how to convert from ogg/mp3 to wav. :D

I found better documentation for lame here (http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/doc/html/index.html)

Alistair, you can find BladeEnc here (http://bladeenc.mp3.no/).
