I have a nice PIII 850 with Win98 on the primary HD. I installed Mandrake 8.1 on a second HD (It had a prior working install of 8.1, but I moved the disk to this computer and couldn't get it going again)

I decided to try LILO instead of a boot floppy this time. When I boot, I just get a constant repeat of "01 01 01 01 01 01 01..." It never stops. It keeps scrolling and scrolling...

I did an fdisk /mbr so I can now boot Win, but for some reason, even the boot floppy I made during the install won't boot Linux now.

This happend to me on my old old Win95 machine a while back, but at the time, I just assumed the hardware was too old. This is a newer Compaq with Win98SE.

Does anyone know why LILO does this or how I could install it hand have it work?

Or how I can make a new boot floppy without doing a copmplete reinstall?

Thanks

Moron to the rescue: (pun intended) Read this (http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/index.html#er).

Lilo Crash Recovery howto (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO.html)

Somehow, Lilo is messed up and now comes the command line. <newbie quakes in boots>

Are you ready to get your hands dirty? :D

Well, fortunately, the only reason I do this is to get my hands dirty... :) See, I'm a 40 year old marketing guy and those ties we have to wear cut of the blood flow to our brains - kills more brain cells then beer. Linux is one of my few defenses against total cerebral atrophy.

Thanks for the references - I'm sure one way or another, I'll find a way to make a new boot floppy, but my research skill have failed me and I haven't found any explanation for the "01 01 01 01..." from a new installation.

I believe '01 01 01 01' usually indicates the boot/root partition cannot be found.

Try booting from the bootdisk again and at the Lilo prompt, then

boot root=/dev/hdb#

Replace # with the boot/root partition device number.
