I have been trying to get my X desktop resolution into 800x600 with xf86Config on Mandrake 7.1, since the system takes the first working screen mode, I wiped out the 640x480 option.
Now I get a message saying that no screen resolution is support and X won't boot.

I have fixed X not booting by running xf86Config again, but now I'm stuck with 640x480 and 16 colors! It looks awful http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

Please help..

get into X at 680x480, then open DrakConf and there should be a screen resolution tool on there, do it through that.

Have you tried fully booting and goinf into DrakeConf?

If not...you've been doing it the h-a-r-d way. In case you weren't aware of it, some of the things that the other distros force you to do the tough way, MDK has a very newbieIzed and easy way of accomplashing.

It's called DrakeConf...and screen resolution is one of them. That's the primary reasons I dropped RH and went to MDK.

Also if you resoltuions are setup properly in your XF86Config file then you should be able to ctrl+alt+plus or ctrl+alt+minus to switch between the various resolutions.

Thanks all! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I managed to get X into 800x600 by playing around with xf86config and using Crtl+Alt+plus.

I still have yet to fix the colours, but I will try DrakConf. Thanks again.

Oh, also while I'm here...

When using xf86config, I get to a screen that asks if you want to view the vidoe card database. If I choose Yes, there are a few messages saying various cards are missing then it exits the program.

Any ideas to whats that all about?

For that last thing.... You will probably want to reinstall the xf86config package. It sounds like the card database got damaged.

Thanks all, I got X in 800x600 with 32 bit colour using DrakConf. I think I'm getting the hang of Linux now http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
