my problem as posted on tech support problem (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=013228)
I want to try another distro, I'm thinking about red hat or suse, I just want a godamn :) disto that will work.

 SuSE
:D
If you can't get Mandrake8 in, you ain't gonna get anything else in! Why won't Man8 go in?

So far I've used Mandrake 8.0 and Red Hat7.1, my favourite? RH7.1.
It's easy to install, use, etc...
By the way if you want help installing drake8.0 try out mandrake.com, and go to their expert service...you can ask other mandrake users etc about your problem. I got some great responses really quickly when I had troubles...it's worth a shot because Mandrake is a pretty cool distro. ;)

one thing is...did u format the hard drive then try to boot from cd rom?
and also did you format the drive with mandrake?
that /tmp/stage2 error is looking mighty familiar...and ive seen it while install mandake7
i was getting it (or something similar to it) because i formatted(fat32) the drive after fdisking...try fdisking the disk then dont format and try reinstalling...see if tha helps...keep us updated!

Nope didn't work
:) Nice idea, though
I have tried unplugging my modem and printer cable, bar leaving the soundcard in, and installing
Is it worth trying another distro, as my system seems to have a problem with X-windows. Do the other distro's have the exactly the same x-windows

I know think the problem has something to do with my 2nd installation cd, because I encountered the 'device not found' on the computer that it works on, but it documented the error and told me to email xfree@xfree.org (gdk-error:fatal 10 error 104)
I was however a once off error and installed the 2nd time.
Anyway the reason why I think it got something to do with the 2nd installation cd is becuase on the computer that it works it does not ask for the 2nd cd during install.
However when I tried a textual install on the computer that it doesn't work on.
The first cd ejects unexpectly at about 98%(i think looking for cd 2, graphical install asks for cd 2 however) and says there is a failure to install a perl rpm or something.
When unmounting filesystem
/tmp/stage 2
this suggests to me that "2" could mean cd 2.
Also when I try graphical installation, and tell it I only have cd 1. I get the following when unmounting.
/tmp/image
/tmp/stage2
Still no nearer to installing it
Do you think I should assume my cd2 is faulty and try another disro?, possibly a single disc distro?
thanks

I can't solve your Mandrake woes, but I can suggest an alternative if you are looking to switch.
www.progeny.com (http://www.progeny.com)
It's Debian in a nice package really. I've only been using it a short while, but I love it. It's very intuative and not so difficult for a newbie to learn (In my opinion anyways...I am a newbie and it hasn't given me "many" problems so far).
You can download the iso's from their site with pretty darn good download speeds.
Good luck!

I've used Armedlinux, Corel, Mandrake, Slackware, and now Suse. I really like Suse but I don't have much to complain about the others. They all installed pretty easily. I've heard good things about Progeny.
