This is not quite a Linux question, but I used to know a site that could measure download speed. Such as for modems, DSL or Cable. Do any of you newbies remember that site?

Yeah, I know of an MSN one http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
How awful is that ... that's the best one I can come up with off the top of my head:

DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com/tools) has connection tools, including download speed tests.

I would stick to the dslreports ones, I just think they are a little more believable plus you can test it from 3 different sites. Plus there are many other tools there also.

Cool, I my avg. download is ~850 kbps but my upload averages ~1200 kbps.

This is on a T1 line using the NY server at 6:45am ET

On the MSN speed test though, I can never get above 550 kbps...that's screwy.

The download and upload speeds will be affected by the internet lines between you and the server. It will also be affected by the speed of the actual server you are testing from. Besides what would you expect from a server running NT/win2k? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks everybody! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'll give them a try.
I have DSL now, but I was going to try out cable sometime soon. I wanted to compare which one has a better download speed in my area.

I got wireless broadband here. It's somewhat like ADSL but faster. I get around 280kilobytes/sec average. Uploads is about 32k-40k. Yes that is 280k/sec not kilobits.

The most accurate way to test your download speed is to download a 5 MB or larger compressed file from a nearby ftp server using a ftp client. When the file is downloaded, it will give you the time it took and the average bps.
