After using Netscape for a little bit it will stop loading pages, and just sit there and not respond. After you close netscape the launcher does not work and it will not load up again. Then sometimes you get error messages about a Netscape lock file.

For me to get Netscape loadable again i have to cd into /home/ryan/.netscape and remove the lock file. This is VERY annoying as it keeps happening more persistantly. Is there a way to stop this, or is there a way to right a bash script i could write that would delete the lock file, right when its created?

Also, I get error messages about "Bookmarks changed on disk and are being reloaded." What is this message and how can i prevent it from popping up all the time?

Thanks

I had the same problems running Slackware 8.0 and Netscape 4.77 I went to netscape.com and downloaded the install file for netscape 6.1. After having to go through a few hoops, I was able to get that workig and running. Now everything runs smoothly as far as lock files on my system for netscape.

I would like to keep Netscape Navigator 4.77 by any means. I am trying to keep disk space at a minimum, I just compiled Mozilla from source, I am in the means of trying to get Galeon working.

I think netscape 4.77 was released with a couple of bugs for linux. there is a 4.78 release. I know netscape 6.1 is less than a 30 meg download.. works great. Netscape 6.1 is based on the mozilla 0.9.2 and a few of the bugs I've found in it has bee fixed. As for the lock file, I'm not sure.. you can also kill the process by typing kill ### that is given to you whe the lock message comes up. I know upgrading my browser solved my problem.

Good luck.
