How do I set up my ATT@HOME cable to use DHCP on SuSE 7.1. No matter what I do I can't seem to get it to work. Could somebody take me threw it step-by-step? Maybe I'm missing something? Anyone gotten theirs to work?

I do not know much about SuSe, but you are going to have to plug in your gateways, DNS servers, etc in your network settings. Then you will specify DHCP as opposed to a static IP and it should not have any problem detecting you. Some commands to try would be linuxconf, netconf, control-panel(i think this is red hat specific?). If none of those work, try browing through some GUI menus in search for a network config tool. You shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Also, make sure the kernel recognizes your NIC card, and you have the right modules loaded.

Good luck

I did exactly that using the yast2 (suse config tool). I put exactly all that info in just like you said, but it still does not work. Im tired of having to manually set up proxies. Could some please help me.

It simply times out. It tries 3 or 4 times then it says the network could not be started. I know all the info I entered is correct because it works under static IP.

after "starting" your network... type ping 127.0.0.1 and if you get responses then your network card works, if not, then you can narrow your prolems down to that.

W00t!!! I got it to work. SuSE's support database rocks. Unfortunately, the fix I had to do was supposed to be fixed since 7.1. I wonder if that is 7.1 inclusive. Whatever, me be verrrrrrrrry happy. Thanks all for your inspiration. Hot diggity I love linux. It's so fun and squishy.

How did you do it? I've used SuSE 7.1 on RoadRunner before and never had any problems, but I am using @Home at home and I know they require you to input a specific computer name (and I know you hafta fill in a fully resolved computer name for @Home in linux, or at least, that's what I did to get it work)

Sorry guys it was all a big fluke. Yast2 lied to me. It said I was on DHCP but when I restarted this morning all hell broke loose. It didn't find my ip via DHCP. I'm using static right now. mcmanus69, can you explain to me what you mean by a fully resolved hostname? I have "computer#" (@home gave it to me) in the hostname field and "home.com" in the domain. Obviously this isnt right cause it dont work. Also did you have to go into yast and change the config file at all? Thanks. Don't worry guys. Even after all this I still love linux, but I HATE @HOME!

Here's what I have tried.

I got yast2 "hostname & DNS".
I put in the number thingy @home gave me.
I put "haywd2.sfba.home.com" under domain.
I leave "Change Hostname via DHCP" unchecked.
I go to yast2 "expert network configuration".
I tell it to use DHCP.
I input my primary and secondary nameserver.
I put in my default gateway.
I got to finish.

The network does not start back up. What am I doing wrong? Are there any variable I need to change in a config file somewhere? Thanks.
