I'm using caldera2.4 and I was wondering if there are energysaving utilities for linux...
I had mandrake7.2 installed for a bit and it had an energystar type utility... where do i download it and
how does the whole energystar and linux thing work?

Thank you,
Will

I have the following line in my .xsession file.

exec xset dpms 1200 3600 3600 &

It seems to work well, but it only works in X.

EDIT: formatting

You can set your DPMS in XF86Config. From the console you will need kernel support for console blanking.

I was told to go into the kernel and recompile it and turn on apm... I did that and the whole compileing thing went well... but I still don't know what I have to do to get energystar or rather get my monitor to power off when not in use.

Okay i'm just writing this so that my post stays where people might read it... thanks for your time

You compiled a kernel with apm, then installed the kernel with lilo? And it dosent work? Thats how i got my console to turn off. But X dosent...
Try sticking that line at the end of the file. Post back if it isnt working.

7 I did the echo thing (as you mentioned in my other post) and it added that line to the very end of the .xsesssion file. I then restarted the xserver (ctrl + alt + backspace) I then sat around for a bit and nothing happened... I then edit is from 1200 3600 3600 to 3 3 3 (in a hope to speed the whole thing up... you know... see if it worked) well i sat around some more and my monitior didn't power down.

Is this supposed to be able to work in xwindows or console... either way i sat around in both for a bit and the monitor didn't power down.

Do you think you could post your .xsession and I could compare or maybe xset has something to do with it all (a post of that too... maybe).
Thank you for your help... i'm going to add this to my other post so if you reads this you don't need to answer both.

Okay 7... if you read this i'm sorry... i'm try to keep this post active so that other may read it and join the effort to help this energy star issue out.

7... what kernel are you using... i'm using 2.2.14 and it has the options for apm and I have in enabled. I also checked my bios and all energystar things were go.

In your XF86Config(-4) there should be a line in the graphics section that reads:
Option "DPMS"

Then it it should work in X.

Strangely... in my XF86Config file there is nothing with dpms... and I don't have a XF86Config(-4) file... my system's defaul xfree86 install was 3.3.6 and I have updated it to 4.0.2 ... and when i installed it said yes to everything... even the japanese docs. Interesting... i've seen it before (these were from old back in the day type installs) but the one i have going now doesn't have that file.

I was told to modify .xsession... I found this file in my /home/mename folder

oddly... to me anyway... this file wasn't in my root dir... could it be that I want to edit the wrong .xsessoin file... could it be that the .xsession file is somewhere else

AHHHHH.... I really should study for my finals...

I added the line exec xset dpms 1200 3600 3600 & at the end of .xinitrc ... I really don't know why i did this... you can thank the passing of time for my forgetfulness... anywho... when i'm in the console my screen will go black... but the monitor still doesn't power down. and when that line is added to either my .xinitrc or .xsession (both in /home/mename) when the screen goes black there is a funny line of colour that slowy appeared on the screen... i don't know why its there.

could my problems some how be affected by me not having xscreensaver on my computer... i normally just prefer to power the monitor down so i uninstalled it...

thanks for all the continued help.

I get that too, blank screen but no power down, both on the command line and in X.

I've enabled DMPS but haven't got APM compiled into the kernel. Do you really need APM?

Carwyn: yep, you will defently need APM in your kernel.

Ok this is getting insane. Ive re-compiled my kernel and added all of the APM options. Ive installed apmd and I know the man page for xset off by heart... and i still cant get X to turn off!

My consoles fine, allways has been. My monitor turns all the way off. But X just will not die.

The xset manpage says the command;

xset dpms force off

will force the server to switch to off. But does it? nooooo...

Will some Linux guru pleeeeese tell us why X wont apm?

Once-Ler

apmd??? well I haven't heard that one before... so anywho i downloaded it and installed it... i tried running apm -S the screen goes black for about two seconds and then pops back on... and your right about xset dpms force off... it doesn't work.

Once-Ler

Okay i read some stuff and "apm -S" is for suspend... wich for me only last a few seconds (probably because i have a cablemodem and it might have something to do with my machine never being fully quite) I tried "apm -s" and that stands for standby wich set my machine into standby so by typeing that command I think I have sucess http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif hurray for us. Just in case something pops up i'm going to continue this post.

Thank you all for you help.

Okay so life isn't so happy... apm -s only works as root... and i want to use it in blackbox. I could leave an open terminal but that is silly and I can't loging to root through bbkeys... I tried setting it up using

kdesu root "apm -s"

i enter the root password... it it goes into standby mode and then exits right out of it... the battle rages on.

what does dpms mean? can I turn this on? how do i properly edit my xset file... who knows it could have something to do with it... and if you know it does... how so?

I edited my xset file through vi once and if i hadn't of backed it up... things would be so hot.

is there anyway to execute the:

exec xset dpms 1200 3600 3600 & other then .xsessoin?

so far as i can tell apmsleep works... you have to change the SUID (not to sure how to do that command style, but in kde its pretty damn straight forward)
