I've installed Mandrake 7.2 but I can't connect to the internet. For
example if I try to go to www.linuxnewbie.org, (http://www.linuxnewbie.org,) it tells me it doesn't
recognize the server name? I've been told that during setup it would ask me
for my name servers which it didn't. Now when I reboot it identifies every
thing during the boot except for dhcpd so I thought I may not be getting an
IP address. Why is dhcp unable to get an IP? Also manually put in my
nameservers into the \etc\resolv.conf file but that hasn't helped
either...I'm at a loss and need some help. I'm new to Linux and would like
to be able to get answers on the net without having to switch to Windows.

I am new to Linux myself, so everything I say needs to be taken with utmost caution. Anyway, I am running Mandrake 8 and my IP address is also not picked up during booting. I don't know why that is, but I work around this by opening the Mandrake Control Center (on the desktop in Mandrake 8), navigating to the Network Connection section and pressing the configure bottom. On my machine, that brings up a configuration screen similar to the one during installation. It leads through several windows asking essentially the same questions as during installation and I give the same answers. I don't enter an IP address but check the dhcp box. After this routine, the network connection mysteriously starts. Not very elegant of course, but it works for me. mandrake 7.2 may, of course, be different.

Open the Mandrake Control Center, get into Internet & Network. Hit the Configure button.
Make sure DHCP is selected, Autodetect, and choose "Cable Connection", when you see the menu.
If you have a LAN on a Router, it's different.

I have @home and I had the same problems a few days ago. First, get ALL your IP information from Windows, or whatever by going to RUN--msipcfg

Then enter that info into the Mandrake Control Centre, even all the Expert Mode stuff, make sure DHCP is on too. And the last thing you must know is that ROGERS @HOME IS A LAN CONFIGURATION!!!

That's what was giving me problems and that's how I fixed it. Hope it helps.

With @home I have noticed that if you don't name your box or router or what have you to the exact host name that they give you their dhcp server will not issue you an ip address and dns server addresses

Really? I'm on Shaw@Home and I just entered whatever I wanted into the hostname, and it worked...
