i'm a new user who has just gotten a new laptop preinstalled with windows2000 and network connections and configurations to my university network. Needless to say, i am not going to ditch windows for linux. Just yet. I would like to try a linux program, but since 2000 has absolutely no dos support, it almost seems impossible. I have tried booting to both 98 and 95 floppies to get the dos prompt but always seem to come up with some error. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN EXPERIENCE LINUX DISPITE MY CURRENT SITUATION.

Huh? Linux program under DOS? That wouldn't work, you can't start linux stuff in a DOS-Prompt.
If you want to play a little bit with linux I would suggest a distro which can be installed under Windows. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the distro, something like WinLinux, but I may be wrong.

Hope this helps

i know that you cannot run lin from the dos prompt, but i do know that you need dos support to run it on both winlinux and phat linux. Neither however are compatable with 2000 because it has no dos support. I have tried this. Thanks anyway, any other help??

make 2 more partitions on your hdd, and put linux on one, and your swap on the other.

good luck

edit...hitting f8 i beleive will put you in dos mode, when it's just the black screen saying windows is starting with the progress bar at the bottom.
