I am quite new to Linux. I have downloaded and burned the CD set for RH7.3 and it installed fine. However, Win 2K then won't. I am using 2 disks, an 80GB drive 0 for Windows, with a 10GB Fat32 partition to share data, and a 13BG drive 1 for Linux.

After recovery, I realised that I should not have run a boot loader, GRUB or LILO so settled for a start-up disk. However, what do I type when the disk prompts for the location of the LInux Image. It seems to be in /dev/hdb1 but that doesn't work.

Any ideas please? Should I use a boot manager, or not?

Hi,

I have a couple of questions here.
Which bootloader are you using? Grub or Lilo?
What do you mean by recovery and Win2k won't?
You recover by booting from your Linux boot disk? Then you
should type "linux rescue" to go to rescue mode.

However, what do I type when the disk prompts for the location of the LInux Image. It seems to be in /dev/hdb1 but that doesn't work.

Oh, your computer thinks that you are trying to install Linux. It
tries to detect the image from harddisk, CDROM or Network.
Hence it is asking you where is it.

But what do you want to rescue? I don't get your question here.

Sorry, I have not made myself clear. I have installed RH 7.3 twice but both had problems.

1. Installed RH and GRUB and everything ran smoothly and LINUX booted fine. However, no Win 2K. In despair, I have accounts files to access to update etc, I re-installed Windows which presumably overwrite the boot loader so no LINUX.

2. Installed RH and no boot loader and settled for floppy disk boot. On inserting the floppy and booting, the screen asked for the location of the LINUX Image. I tried all the places I could think of but none worked.

So, do I

a> Use a boot loader and how do I make it dual boot windows

or

b> Can someone tell me what I should type for the LINUx Image at the boot disk prompt.

Alternatively should I get a third party boot manager?

Thanks for your help.

I don't have Win2000 so I cannot help you for a.
As for b, read this

I posted about this problem last month and using Red Hat 8.3 I have not been able to solve it. Now, I have tried with a DVD veriosn of Mandrake, 8.3. It offered to automatically sort out the Boot Sector so I supidly said yes.

I was amazed to see it had managed the job perfectly and I now can run either operating system as well as share data with the Fat 32 partition I have.

I have used hda1 for Windows 2000, 3 partitions, 1 for windows, 1 fats 32 for data and a third for odd games, mp3's etc. (OK, its an IBM 80GB disk!) Mandarke is installed on hdb (13GB disk)

Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.
