With my new system I'm getting, i'm gonna re-install and re-format EVERYTHING.
I'm gonna have a 20gb and a 15gb. my 20gb will be my "stable" hd, so I won't be messing with much once i get everything installed.
this is what I was planning.
20gb:
2gig win98(fat32)
2gig win2k(ntfs)
6gig win_misc(fat32)10gig linux(reiserfs)

15gig:
5gig linux_pkgs(ext2) rpm and/or deb
2gig backup(reiser)
rest = messing around space. testing distros etc.

I might change is around a bit, but mostly I'm wondering how I should partition the 10gb's for linux? the distros may change, but I'd like to keep the same partition table.
I think Mandrake can do this, but I'd like to know just in case.

Thanks!

Just give all the hard drives to Linux. No Win2k needed. ='D

It really is your decision, but I just wanted to warn you that I've had some problems with Mandrake's repartitioning tool. Sure, it may be able to resize stuff without losing information, but I don't think it does a good job of tidying up the borders between linux native and windows native filesystems... because usually after I shuffle things around with the MDK repartitioning tool I get innumerable errors that just WON'T go away about how partition blah blah overlaps partition bleh bleh, etc.

My suggestion: Get Partition Magic. Size out all your partitions beforehand, then go under Mandrake and plug those mount points in! S'what I do. And it works for me! :D

If you have a fair bit of data you'd like to share between operating systems like mp3/videos whatever you might want to create one fairly large fat32 partition and put it all there since just about anything can read fat32.

As much as I hate to say it...I'd give more space for your two bloatware operating systems. You'll find that if you use them with any kind of regularity that space will dwindle fast.

As far as switching distros and keeping info goes, make sure you have / on one partition, and /home on another. That's what I've done and it works great for me. I can switch the distro installed on /, and yet I get to keep all my files no matter how many times I may need to (re)install :)

I'm trying to ween myself as much away from windows as possible though :) so if all my space goes, I'll have no choice but to use linux :)
