I had mandrake 8.0, which was downloaded by someone else, and I made copies of his disks.
I then found out that the 2nd disc was faulty. I've decided that mandrake is the one I want, and I have found out you can buy it from linuxemporium.com .but rather than buying the same disto I'd like the later version, and I think I'm too new to risk buying the beta version.

thanks

I have been using the freq 3 version
of mandrake which is based on the 8.0
version but has a newer kernel (2.4.6) I
believe and KDE 2.2 Beta 1. I havent
had too many complaints with it yet,
but then again I was out of town a few
days after the install. This freq 3
is available at www.mandrakesoft.com (http://www.mandrakesoft.com)
When I installed it though, I was sure to
have clicked on including the Gnome desktop
as a component, but when I fine-tuned the
package options it disappeared and did not
install, and I never reverted back to the
former screen to see why.
To answer your question, there is now an
actual 8.1 beta which came out shortly
afterwards, which another LNO user brought
my atttention at this link which is
not obvious on the Mandrake site:
this is http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/test81beta1.php3

It's probably more buggy (buggier, buggly, etc) than we want at this point, but go ahead
and try it and let us know.....
It does have kernel 2.4.8 (I believe) and
the full KDE 2.2, which some here have
had bugs with... Have fun
Right now I'm kind of in your position, a
tester, and would like to explore the new
supported hardware and kernel, and I don't have that much to lose on
my HD, aside from what I backup in my
non-linux partitions, and new installs
generally won't overwrite your /home
partition if you don't want them to.
