Thanks for the heads up, I'm sending Sensei a link to this topic and the driver page (for the front page news).

Icky! Benching with XFree86 4.0.1 and I am getting way worse performance at almost every level. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

I just finished installing them and ran Quake3 only to discover that its running a lot slower. On the plus side though X doesn't go through ever possible display mode anymore and it didn't crash on me when I ran updatedb which it normally doesn't seem to like. It compiled first time shame about performance.
Also noticed that my RamDac is now being probed at 300Mhz instead of 350 like it used to be.

Yeah, these drivers are way hosed. My only guess is that MAYBE there were put out there to cover the NV20. Since no one has one, we'll just have to wait and see.

Wow! the ONLY nvidia drivers that have worked for me so far! (i've tried the 0.95, 0.94 on previous LM installs with no success) did the same thing i tried the lasst coupla times (pretty much exactly what's in the NHF) and it worked.. woohoo!

now would someone be able to point out how to modify refresh rates?

thanks

Installation of the drivers did not go smooth with my system.. After installing them, X would not start and would freeze just as it was initializing. After a couple of reboots I finally managed to install them again....After that, everything seems to be working fine. Gained an extra 10 FPS in Quake 3. That's about it...

what is with all the whore stories with installing the nvidia drivers. All you have to do is install/upgrade the GLX rpm then if your using a stock kernel (and if you are something is wrong with you) install the NVIDIA_kernel rpm. More than likely for some odd reason you are like me to download the tar.gz source for the nvidia kernel module and compile it yourself.

Here is a little tip to change the cflags line Makefile for optimization:

CFLAGS=-Wall -Wunknown-pragmas -Wno-multichar -O $(DEFINES) $(INCLUDES)

and change it to---

CFLAGS=-Wall -Wunknown-pragmas -Wno-multichar -O9 $(DEFINES) $(INCLUDES)

then type make and compile module

------
btw i have found that the 0.9-6 drivers are much more stable than the 0.9-5 drivers with my SMP system.

I've sorted my speed problem out and now everything seems to be smooth running.
I recompiled my kernel and made AGPGART a module instead of installing it and I now use NVagp (as supplied with the Nvidia drv). Apparently its flaky on some chipsets but I must have got lucky as its great with my AMD irongate. Frame rate is up on previous drivers to the point at which watching demo2 is liable to give you a fit it's so fast.
Anyway I'm happy again.

Hey guys with all the different stories, I am trying to compile some data. Would you mind letting me know which card you have and if the performance increased or descreased?

Thanks!

Okay, some time next week I will install the new driver modules and I will tell you what results I get. This weekend, I'm living up to my reputation as the board's underage drunk. (Did I say that out loud?)

Anyone willing to post a quick way of getting fps counts with the Q3Demo would be much appreciated.

Ah, got confirmation from NVIDIA that I am not an idiot. There is a problem with the drivers in conjuction with GeForce2 GTS & GeForce2 Ultra cards. Since I was benchmarking an Ultra, that explains my problem. They are aware of it, and trying to get a fix.

Interested in taking a peek at our results?

Well, I'm officially sick of this. I've tried many times to get these damn things to work with my TNT1, but they just don't like my modelines. I don't care that XFree is supposed to choose the "best" refresh for the desired resolution, because it doesn't! I run at 1152x864, and XFree defaults to 75Hz, where I can still see the flicker. I have my old XF86config file with all the modelines for all the resolutions and refreshes, and they all work with the nv driver. But when I tried my 100Hz refresh modeline for 1152x864, the image on the screen was all broken and flickery, and X locked up so bad I had to hit the reset button (Yes, I was running as user). I lost a few config files for KDE after the fsck. So I'm back to nv for now.

Hmmm... I have a TNT2 Ultra and I just got the new drivers. Not much of a difference. And, no problems installing.
