I need a mail client to manage my emails, but it needs the handle various email addresses and must have proxy support. I tried Pine... I couldn't find a way to add more than one address, and couldn't find proxy support. I tried Kshowmaik, no proxy support either. I could try Mozilla's mail client, but I can't tell it which ports to use (it'll try to use the same ports as for http or proxy, but Analog X has it's own ports for receiving and sending mails), so any suggestions on which mail client I could use?

I like mutt.

It is highly customizable, and due to it's great flexibility the config files can seem overwhelming at first, and you can spend hours setting it up and tweaking it, but you don't have to.

http://mutt.org has info on it, and you can dl the source files from there as well as sample config files so that you can see the different options that you have.

Have you looked at Sylpheed and the Sylpheed-claws variant? They can be found, along with quite a few other possibilites by a search on http://www.freshmeat.net.

Mutt... another console based client. I don't have much against those.. but... well, they just display plain text, and some of the people who write to me like sending html type of mails. Anyway.. I think I'll go give Sylpheed a try.. thanks for the info.

hehehe... Mutt has filters that can convert html to text and display the results. It works pretty well actually.

I like having a mail client that I can use on the console, cause I like to fiddle and have had a couple occasions where my x-windows wasn't working, and it was nice to not be handicapped by it.

To each his/her own.

I don't know about proxy setting.
But to add more than 1 addresses:
pine->'@'-><name>->'u'->go to addresses->add addresses
->Ctrl-X

But honestly, I don't like pine although this is the only text
mail client that I know. Gotta learn mutt if I have spare time...

I saw Pine... it seems to be able to do EVERYTHING I need... but... that console-look! I don't know why, but whenever I see the console it just... sends me away. I can't get used to the idea of working with a program in the console.. reminds me of DOS days. I know it's good, I know it's efficient, I know it works fast.. but... somehow I feel like I deserve better! I can't even understand how can I feel that.. a mail client is a mail client, don't I only need text for this? Same goes for Vi, I don't need anything else.. but for some reason I feel like I just can't 'degrade' my pc to use console programs when it has much more potential than that... must be the reason why I went for Suse and KDE... I like candy-rich graphics. On the very least... can I make the console transparent? Maybe if I could see the background image the pain will be less. (could this be aside effect of using so much Windows?) In either case... I WILL try Pine... somehow I'll get the strength to.

If you feel more comfortable with an Outlook looking e-mail client, try Evolution from www.ximian.com
It should be able to do everything you need, they designed it to be an Outlook killer so it is very comparable.

Pine sucks ... though it is easy to use and can be used to read
usenet. If you have 300 to 400 mails like me, you may appreciate
to have a more powerful mail client. (The same thing goes to text-
editing. If you have a lousy editor and you need to work with
several codes that interact with each other, I just cannot imagine
how are you going to endure with that)

Does anyone know how to find mail by references-id in Pine? And
how can I convert html to normal text in it? It gets so irritating
to read all the html codes whenever some random advertising
companies mail me

Alright..
I am gonna let my instincts guide me on this.. I still do not feel comfortable using the Konsole, so I'll go and try Evolution... it sounds good, and I do so prefer a program where the options are displayed in a window with checkboxes rather than going to a text file and reading through it... dunno why, they both accomplish the same thing, but I just feel like 'demanding' a higher degree of user-friendliness.

:D Mutt! This dog is trainable! :D

Common e-mail tools:
sendmail - sends mail to local users (and internet when configured correctly)
fetchmail - gets mail from internet pop accounts
procmail - sorts and delivers into separate mailboxes
mutt - mail client that sucks less than all the others

That's okay.
I always look like an alien whenever I use Vim to do several
text-editing in Unix where all my peers use Window tools...

The only convincing reason that I can think of to use a text-
based programs rather than a GUI one is that when something
crashes, sometimes GUI one doesn't inform you anything and it
just hangs there. As for the text-based ones, at least you get to
see some strange and arcane messages and you can google
search your way to find out what has gone wrong.

Personally, I use evolution as a daily thing, and love it. It's got all the functionality of any mail program that I've ever used (or at least that I've ever NEEDED). And it's purdy!!! Admittedly it's annoying to install (I just don't care for ximians installer), but once you get that done, is all good.

Evolution is pretty good, but it seems to be a jack-of-all-trades, and not a master-of-any. E.g. it supports PGP, but doesn't support inline PGP (used by many people) properly. The result is that if you check somebody's inline signature, it shows up as "bad".

It's a little clunky IME too.

Other than that, it does the job. :)
