I have an old Compaq Armada 1580DMT. I can't figure out how to enter the bios settings. I have tried every Function key, Delete, Space Bar, and several others. Any Suggestions?

I have tried F1 through F12, Delete, Del, Insert, Space, The shifts, Controls, and Alt keys, and nothing happens.

How about control+del or control+function key? I have one motherboard that you need to do one of those (I don't remember which) to get in.

Compaq desktops are usually F10.

I'm not sure about their laptops though.

They usually are. My roommate and someone else I work with both have them, and they are both F10.

Thanks for all of the tips, but none have worked. I installed linux another way instead, I put in the disk along with the cd and the disk loaded the cd, and I used a less advanced installer.

I found out that my settings partition was damaged/removed, and the program I downloaded from compaq that should fix this problem doesn't work.

I now need to get in there so that I can have the machine initiate the speakers. Does anyone know another way to fix this problem?

Can you boot from floppy? If so, download a rompaq of bios for it, then flash them...after that. this also re-adds the bootup screen that says "hit xxx to enter setup" and should fix any bios errors that you've got.

Also unplug the Hard Drive which will force the latop to fail post and give you a option to enter the BIOS.

I have looked through many websites searching for an answer. It turns out that linux doesn't support my chipset. I think that I need to recompile my... something. Does anyone know what this means/what I am supposed to do? :(

Wow!!! Nearly 3 months later. Did you get lost on the way back? :p

Could you please post the Compaq Armada 1580DMT specs so we can have a look?

Have you tried www.linux-laptop.net to see if your laptop model is listed?
