hello all,
i am trying everything to get a decent cd burner program to work. i am running RedHat linux 7.3 on the 2.14.8-3 kernel. i tried KOnCD which is built in, but it doesnt support my cd writer and it doesnt have a driver for it. i tried to dl BurnIT which is a java program but it didnt work either because it wont install correctly because i dont have "javac" installed and i cant seem to find it. i tried to download other java code clients to run java code but those didnt install either. xcdroast doesnt look like its made for RH7.3 and im running out of options. anyone got any good programs they use ? please help....

Did you try just doing the command-line cdrecord? That's what most of the gui burning programs are nothing but graphical frontends for.
man cdrecord
Also, do you have your burner set in scsi emulation? It'll have to be in order to work.
cdrecord -scanbus (as root)

no, i didnt try the command line cdrecord. im not too great with commands because im a newbie so GUI just works better for me. i guess i could read the manual and try it that way. i downloaded X-CD Roast and finally got it to install i cant figure it out to save my life. all i wanna do is burn some mp3s onto a cd. im beginning to think that its not an option. if you know anything about that program, please let me know.
when i do the cdrecord -scanbus command it finds my writer (ASUS CRW-1610A) on (0,0). i also have a dvd-rom that i use as my reader, but the program doesnt seem to see it. i think i might just have to stick with windows for burning cds. KOnCD doesnt work because it doesnt have a driver for my writer but after playing with it long enough i did get the program to recognize it, although its unusable to the program. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
linux is cool, this seems to be one downfall.:confused:

For your dvd to be seen by cdrecord -scanbus, you also need to enable scsi emulation for the dvd.
If you have hdc=ide-scsi in /etc/lilo.conf (for Lilo) or /boot/grub/menu.lst (for Grub) for your cdrw, then add your dvd device as well.
hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi

well md, it seems that we meet again, haha. i boot from a startup disk so i added the hdd=ide-scsi line to the syslinux.cfg file. i havent rebooted to check and see if it works but im assuming it does. being able to see my dvd-rom doesnt do me a whole lot of good since i cant seem to find any decent burning programs, preferably GUI. what do you use?

I always use XCDRoast. Works great.
<edit>
With XCDRoast, you first need to run it as root to do the setup and to add any users that you want to have the ability to run XCDRoast.

I'm not familiar with KonCD, but try a test using cdrecord. If it works with that, that xcdroast will work with it. I agree with you that xcdroast is confusing to figure out...I use gnome toaster. I seem to get better results from it.

ok md, i went under root and set it up my reader, writer and set up user accounts. when i login as my normal name and start xcdroast, i get prompted for a root password, i type it in and the window on the taskbar for the program has a little hourglass that turns up and down for 15 seconds, then it goes away, and xcdroast doesnt open. got any ideas what i am doing wrong? i just might have to resort to windows for cd burning. i can access and print to a windows networked printer from my linux box but i cant even use a program on my computer to burn a cd, thats nuts...please help.

It should work if you setup XCDRoast correctly and add the users.
Have you tried the documentation available at www.xcdroast.org ?
Try there or the documentation that is installed with XCDRoast.
Mine is installed in /usr/share/doc/packages/xcdroast-0.98

I'm also having trouble. I went through a big rigamarole downloading and installing the latest version of XCDroast, but I'm still having the original problem, which is:
When I type 'xcdroast' as root on the command line, I get the following error message:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
Does anyone know what this means?

are you trying to run it as root? if yes how are you logging in as root? try with su only from your regular user prompt or run it from the panel.

[SIZE=3] Yep, I tried it as root and I still get the same error message. I did su, su -, and got the error. When I try from panel, it asks for the root password then does nothing.

eroaster is a decent gui cd burning frontend for cdrecord. I find it to be very much like nero. cdrx is a menu driven burning app that is also very nice .

If you are using kde, right-click on the desktop somewhere and then choose - Run - then type kdesu whateverthecommandyouwanttorunis . It will ask for the root password and then the app should open.

yep, the kdesu command worked and xcdroast opened up. i still dont know how to use the program. i doesnt let me drag and drop files into a playlist and i have a hard time finding the files anyways. i have gnome toaster to be much more user friendly

Does anyone know what this means? You have to install it from one of KDE console. I had the same problem when i was installing Netscape Communicator 6.3 on Mandrake 8.0.
So try to install it from KDE
I think thatīll do.
