is it possible to plug in a eithernet cable and go?

My main desktop has windows xp and I have a home network set up. Is there any way to configue my laptop to connect to the network ( xp pro network ) ? Im using Linux with the gnome desktop on the Dell Latitude cpx 500mhz P3 laptop.

Well, I am only posting because I haven't seen anybody else post here. I am sure there are a lot better articles but try what is mentioned in this article on Anandtech... http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=125

You basically have to mount the fileshare.

I also know there is a Samba client, but I have no clue on how to use that from within linux. Try http://www.samba.org for more help.
