can anyone tell me which native English distributions handle Japanese language display and editing well?

Anyone know of any japanese dictionary programs written for any linux distribution?

thanks

(still trying to decide which to take the plunge with...)

My best guess would be to look into TurboLinux.

http://www.turbolinux.co.jp/

is their Japanese home page, and here's a relevant (albeit dated) news story:

Many distributions and suppliers have TALKED about various language supports, etc. but I would try to figure out the size of the installed, Japanese user base if i were you, and news items like this one. After all, Linux development is greatly done by the professional users, and if there's money to be made as well, corporate suppliers (e.g. hardware vendors, ccommercial distributers...) will also expend effort to ccontinuously move things forward.

Yup TurboLinux is a good choice. A lot of Debian developers also work on Japanese stuff.
