From another post, there was some confusion about whether GIMP was a Linux version of Adobe Photoshop or just a Linux version of MS Paint.

Whats your opinion?

Personally I think GIMP is a little more advanced than MS Paint but it doesnt even come close comparing it with Photoshop.

Certainly a lot closer to Photoshop than to MS Paint.

Have you read the Gimp documenation at their site to find out it's capabilities?

A little more advanced then Paint? Thats like saying Microsoft Office is a little more advanced then Notepad. GIMP is an image editing suite, like Photoshop, only it isn't as streamlined as Photoshop. Its free, though, spawned the GTK+, and is one of the best programs I've ever used. I think GIMP *IS* better then Photoshop. I've used Photoshop, and I like the GIMPs setup better. The GIMP is free, as in freedom AND beer, too.

Ha ha :D
I bet you didn't even do a research before saying such a
statement.

Do not look down on others (includes programs too ...)
Even a Linux/Unix text editor can shock many many newbies out
there.

gimp might not be as powerful as photoshop, but in some ways it is organized better.

i've found some problems with the gimp, but I think I have an old version.

I've used PS for quite a few years and it's the premier image manipulator, but after that..... nothing touches the Gimp. In fact I got to the point where PS was hardly opened. The Gimp is fast and lean. Doesn't take up a lot of real estate when used properly. MS paint to the Gimp, what a laugh.

Adobe Photoshop? I've heard tons of that program, but I've never used it myself. What I've always used in Windows was PSP7.0, and from what I've been able to learn in the little time I've had to play with GIMP, I can see it has all the features PSP has (plus more options), the only thing it seems to be missing is a picture tube (maybe I just haven't found it yet), picture tubes... how am I supposed to draw grass without that? Anyway, GIMP is good... and it's free, and it can only get better with time... what else can you ask for?

Many users of Photoshop don't even master 10% of its features. These people should be able to do OK with GIMP. It is no Photoshop, but its no Paintbrush either.

Here at the office every idiot wanted a Photoshop license. We said sure, if your job description says artist we'll get it for you, otherwise you will have to do with Photoshop Elements. Well, guess what? None of the Photoshop Elements users has ever *****ed about not doing what they want it to do.

Excuse me? Flash? Well I never thought of that... I don't use image manipulation programs for anything that 'moves'. I was talking about strictly 2D saved static images.. or something like that. Well, as long as it does what I need, I won't complain. There isn't anything that remotely compares to GIMP in the Linux enviroment... or is there? (even if there were.. I doubt it could compare price-wise).

Gimp has the feature of being able to make custom brushes. Make one or more using your unique method of portraying grass or any other element you would like a repeatable brush pattern for.

So it's possible? Then it's official... not for nothing Gimp is called THE Image Manipulation Program. Now if I could get some vacations.. I really need time to play around and learn Gimp... not to mention the other hundred or so programs in Linux and that samba server setup and... gee... walking into Linux is really like starting from nothing, everything needs to be re-located and re-configured, good thing almost everything comes already with the installation cd's.

GIMP is a great program and is one of the reasons I switched to Linux. There's a Windows port, but it's terribly unstable.

It's not a "Linux version" of anything. It's just an excellent program that's FREE!

Actually the newest port of Gimp for win is just as stable as any MS application. I've used it in 2K both as Fat and NT. Not one iota of a problem.

LOL I'm sorry, I didn't mean THAT close to MS Paint. :p

When I made that statement I didn't know where the filter options were in GIMP, cuz in PS they were next to File, Edit, etc. But the GIMP I have as far as I'm concerned I have to right click to access those options. O well sorry for the confusion. :D

It was good laugh now when I look back on what I said. :p
