I'm new to RedHat 7.3 and have been experiencing some glitches with Nautilus. It takes forever to load pages and I sometimes loose all my program icons off my desktop. What does this program do ? and why do I need it? Can I simply erase it or will that wreak havoc beyond the usual havoc known as Linux? Thanks for your support.......
Nautilus is mainly a filemanager & it is used to draw the desktop, i personally hate the darn thing and do not install it...
as a matter of fact those that frequent this BBS and have read some of my other posts have most likely noticed my rants about such things, i am a loyal Linux user and i am not hesatant to bash any kludgeware included with Linux, such as lately i have bashed KDE-3 too...
i have done a custom install on both Redhat7.3 & Slackware8.1 and keep out KDE-3 and installed a older version of KDE (KDE-2.1.1) which is much more stable of a release of KDE, Gnome is ok as long as you leave Nautilus out of the picture, instead open a terminal and type in mc and use Midnight Commander as a file manager & file browser (if it is installed)...
my suggestion is learn all you can about Linux and just use what works for you, which mostly includes doing custom installs, and leaving some things out and adding a few things that work better that are sometimes left out of default installs...
GoodLuck & HappyTrails :)
