in order to run KDM (login manager) i have to be root, is this safe?
can i be logged in as root and have KDM open while logged in as a different non-root user?
or should i do it the old fashioned way?
what is the config file for which wm/dm to start up with?
is it /etc/.xinitrc?

Yes, of course it is. When you start kdm, it interrupts the shell only briefly and then gives you the shell back. You can then and easily log that account off.
