I am trying to learn Linux Mandrake via a removeable Hard drive system.

Pri Master: 20 gig (OS)
Pri Slave: 20 gig (data)
Sec Master: 20 gig (Graphics)
Sec Slave: 12X DVD drive

Mandrake 7.2 installed except it would not work with my win modem. I went to a local shop and asked for a Hardware modem. They sold me an AOpen FM56-SM Soft PCI Modem. I can not get the Drax configurator to make it work. So far, all this Linux is Greek to me. Dos is still Greek to me. Any idea where I should start trying to get the modem to work?

One other question. I have files made with windows on two other drives. If I use the Drax program to recognize the drive, will I be able to access the files in Linux?
Will the drive still work with Windows?

Dude, you got sold another win modem. A soft modem is a win modem.

If you mount your other partions in Linux you can access them and they will still be fine in Windows.

I suspected as much on the modem. I spent an hour backing up my data last night so I'll try the Drax utility to get the other drives recognized.
Are there any 56K PCI hardware modems?

I found this info http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/rg/

Lists modems that work with Linux and modems to stay away from. Also you will pay more for a hardware modem.

Thanks dhaze, I thought I had checked on the AOpen as being useable. I have found some drivers that may let the AOpen work but getting them into the OS is another trick for me.

I recommend a external modem. Then you know exactly what port it's on etc. I use a zoom 56K true V90 and it works great.

External is the way to go, no probs, you just say, "its on ttys0" and everything just works. Easiest $70 worth of peace I've ever spent. I actually saw a 56K external in Fry's for $50 last week so they're getting cheaper. No , if I can only get the sound card to work ......

The 3Com external modem is IT. Never had a problem with it, and used it on several different machines.

If you HAVE to go internal PCI, I used to have one of those ActionTec Call Waiting modems that worked fairly well.

Thanks, I'll start researching the external modems.
The issue now is where to put it and such.
