I've just gotten Linux up on my computer at work. Most of the work I do is in image processsing and analysis. For me to be able to use Linux routinely, I need to install an equivalent capability.

I currently use a commercial Win package called ImagePro by Media Cybernetiucs. They do not publish a *NIX compatible version. There are several freeware Win packages, and at least one that I know of for the Mac (NIH Image) that has also been ported to the PC. There used to be an excellent free package for UNIX called Khoros, with a GUI shell called CANTATA, but alas!...it has long since gone commercial.

Does anybody know of a free image processing/analysis package for Linux? I have and use The Gimp - both the Win and Linux versions - but that's not an image processing/analysis app - it's an image editing app. In a nutshell, an image processing app will not only provide tools for a wide range of image modification (brightness, contrast, gamma, color operations, image arithmetic, filtering, and many other more sophisticated perations) but also provide a means of extracting numerical data from the images and exporting that data to file formats that can be used for analysis. It is also essential for my work that there be a scripting capability. ImagePro has a macro editor, but also supports a subset of BASIC and C so that externally generated and running programs can call ImagePro functions - very useful!

Some Win users do use Photoshop for their image processing, making heavy use of standard and custom plugins, but that's not really adequate.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Freeware is highly preferrred since I am not willing to make a large investment until I can test the waters to see if I can support my processing needs in Linux.

Thanks!
