Folks, need help please!!!

I have a perfectly well running Mandrake 8.1 system (see end of mail for config). I need to upgrade my kernel 2.4.18 in order to allow my Sharp Zaurus Linux PDA to sync with the desktop.

Question: Where and how do I upgrade the kernel alone? I tried downloading and installing Mandrake 8.2 but I am getting too many errors. I am wondering if I need to do all that...

Thanks

You can just download the 2.4.18 kernel source from www.kernel.org.

Follow the kernel compiling NHF's or perhaps Mandrake have their own documentation on their site for compiling the kernel.

Did just that and it worked. Downloaded 2.4.18 pack and built kernel, installed (LILO), rebooted and voila! most of the system actually works. More importanty, my Zaurus can now access the internet through the Linux box. Cool.

Of course something went wrong, sound doesn't work. I must not have selected some option in menuconfig because the es1371 module now reports ac97_codec missing.

Thanks

Good job so far.

AFAIK all that is required for the es1370 and es1371 is sound and the module.

#
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_BT878 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_EMU10K1 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_FUSION is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CS4281 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ES1370 is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371=m

Can you see sound and/or soundcore and es1371 in the new modules directory?

/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/sound
