i thought most installs were to be tars or rpms? but i went to the limewire site and the download file is a BIN file... how do i install this?
Also there is another file that they said is required "Java2TM Runtime Environment, v. 1.3.1 (JRE) installed. You can get the JRE from the Sun web site at: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/'
and that file extentision is rpm.bin
how come its not .rpm??
how do i get this all to work?
thanks

to install limewire, you will need to go to open a console, and cd to the directory where you downloaded the limewire setup program. Then do chmod u+x LimewireLinux.bin(assuming, of course, this is what it's called, it is if I remember corretly though). After this, ./LimewireLinux.bin That will launch the installer for you, but you need the java installed first.
To install your java, repeat the same steps 1 & 2 above (chmodding j2re1.3.1.rpm.bin [or whatever], then ./j2re1.3.1). this will prompt you to agree to an ELU, once you type yes and hit enter, it will extract the .rpm file from the binary file. Then su to root, and rpm -Uvh j2re1.3.1.rpm [again, or whatever the file is called]. It's a lot easier than it sounds.

k the first step was to install the java thing, so i did the command and it unpancked an rpm, so then i installed that rpm and it said 100% and a package came called jre-1.3.1_04-fcs was intalled
so then the next step was to chmod, i did that and then i had to ./LimeWireLinux.bin
and it says
extractign resources
confiuging installer for system enviroment
No virtual machine coule be found in your PATH enviro. variable
You must install a VM prior to running this program
[root@localhost /programs]#
But i thoguht i just did the java thing.......

No problem then. All you have to do is open your ~/.bash_profile using your favorite editor (VIM), and add the line "export PATH=$PATH:/pathtojava".
If you don't now where java was installed, open a terminal and su to root and do whereis libjvm.so. I believe the default directory for java is /usr/local/java/j2re1.3.1/bin.

settings, konqueror browser, appearance, minimum font size.
one thing ive noticed myself is even if you edit the path right, it still might give you errors about not having a jv machine. also, try just clicking on the LimeWireLinux.bin script rather than running ./LimeWireLinux.bin from the command line.
why not post your .bash_profile?

that only made icons text bigger, not the text on websites, like i can hardly read peoples posts, and i have it set on large
here is my bash profile
# .bash_profile
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
# User specific environment and startup programs
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
BASH_ENV=$HOME/.bashrc
export BASH_ENV PATH
unset USERNAME
export PATH-$PATH:/pathtojava
and i tried clickint the bin files and it doenstt do anyhting

try reading what i posted. that link should help you out. "path to java" has to be the path where java is installed.
also, konqueror blows for web browsing. use galeon or mozilla

well i dont know who had the original problem but im running redhat 7.3 as well and i just installed java and limewire the other day. i WILL say that i was using mandrake and if you get errors it might be because you have "kaffe" installed which is a java vm and that would give me errors until i removed it and use sun's version.

Hey again,
Well I had the "bad java," or the older version of it installed just fine. Clean as pie.
Until now.
It's just lockin' up on that launch screen.
