Hello,

Kinda confused! I currently have sdsl with two public ip addresses (paying extra for) which I intended to use for my two nameservers. I've configured the etho in both boxes using the 172.x.x.x ip's provided by the isp for public addresses. How come when I get on the net and use one of those sites that tells you your ip it comes back with a 205.x.x.x number?
Just trying to figure out how I will use these pubic ip addresses for my ns1 and ns2 boxes when I get the dns set up.
Thanks

Looks like there is a gateway doing NAT (network address translation) between you and the "real" internet. Which means your IP isn't really public.

There is a private range 172.16.0.0/255.240.0.0 within 172.x.x.x . Anyway any address range might be made private by putting a NAT box as the gateway.

Just a thought I had after adding this post.
My current network at home.
From dsl modem to 4 port hub-two lane lines directly to the two linux boxes-one lan line from hub to rt314 router-two lan lines from router to two win pcs. I know the router is set for Nat but I thought this would only affect the two win pcs running from the router.
I could disable the nat on the router but maybe the nat is being ran through my isp?
Don't know if hub to router is correct either.

Aren't 172.x.x.x internal, non-routable IPs?
