OK 2 main questions:

1. Is anybody here tried E0.17 (the new enlightenment window manager)? Any good.

2. What are people's perceptions of Waimea? (Other than it's too hard to spell ;)) I found it very pretty, but a little unstable, and I'm not sure I like the lack of minimise feature, but I do like the Alt-Tab listing, which I miss in Fluxbox.

Oh, and fill out the Poll.

i use Blackbox (my favorite) and sometimes WindowMaker, sometimes KDE but only version 2.1.1 in KDE...

I would say mine, but I'm a bit bored of it and want things to look like this:

I'm working on it atm.

1. No, but I will soon! Looks like it could be pretty nifty.

2. Waimea is just unstable Blackbox with a bunch of random transparent things. This (in my opinion) only decreases the functionality and makes things hard to see and stupid looking. If, however, you want window lists with your alt+tab, just use Blackbox and bbkeys.

and to those of you that havent used Blackbox that much, those little buttons on the taskbar are for:::

the left button will switch between different workspaces, and the button on the right will switch between open applications within a given workspace...

I don't see how anyone could like blackbox more than fluxbox. First of all, tabs kick ***. Minimize to taskbar is useful once in a while. What does blackbox do that fluxbox can't do? I fail to see how it is in any way better.

Well how the hell can I do that when enlightenment isn't listed? ;)

hmm i like flux and blackbox. flux a little more though.

however i have been using waimea 0.3.3 for hmm almost a month and it has been very stable and it is immensely easier to configure than bb or fb in my mind. It is does need work, especially with menu functionality. That being said i find it just as good a flux and black box.

I've compiled and used E17 and I liked it pretty well, but it's in heavy development, so you have to do everything yourself to configure it. Here's a quick screenshot:

BTW, I primarily use FVWM2, can't vote, sorry. :)

there are some more bb clones that you could have listed...

I'm a recent Fluxbox convert. Damn, this is one lean, mean and clean window manager. This is my initial snapshot http://pws.best.vwh.net/gifs/wm/fb-1.jpg

I'm working on cleaning it up a bit. I have gkrellm on the top left, the fluxbox panel on the bottom right and the gnome panel on the lower left. I was playing a dvd in the background which is why the cpu meters were so busy.

I'm running RH7.2 with my stock 2.4.18 kernel on a dual celeron 366 Abit BP-6. It was a ***** getting the lm_sensor package working but I finally got it.

Fluxbox, Aterm, Mozilla 1.0, gkrellm... sure does make Linux look sweet.

What does blackbox do that fluxbox can't do?

Nothing, which is why I like blackbox more. I don't have any use for tabs or the minimize to taskbar bit. Or anything else that fluxbox has to offer. So i've just stuck with BB. I also use windowmaker as my secondary WM.

1. Never tried E0.17, so I don't have an opinion about it.

2. I installed Waimea just the other day. So far so good, I was gonna give up on it because I found it to be a bit more confusing to configure but I'm still sticking with it. I also enjoy the Xft config part. It's kinda neat if you think about it. But i'm getting the feel for it. It's quite nice.:)

Exactly. I couldn't have said it better myself. I used Fluxbox for quite a while, trying to convince myself that I liked it better, but the fact is, I didn't. For me, Blackbox is better. And if I wanted to use a "featureful" Blackbox, I'd use Openbox, or possibly Waimea, not Fluxbox. I can't even believe it's gotten as popular as it has, when there are SO many better Blackbox clones out there.

Well, I just tried Waimea and was left with a sour taste in my mouth.. both the stable and developer release. It was easy to compile, about the same size tarball as Fluxbox. Configuration was very screwy. I read the install instructions at the website and followed exactly what they said about creating a ~/.waimea directory structure and copying the default data files to there. And then I copied the default .waimearc file over.

I noticed that if I replaced the style, menu and action files in .waimerc that was recommended then I got no menus at all on startup. i,e, if I changed the first 3 lines in .waimearc

From:

styleFile: /usr/local/share/Waimea/styles/Default
menuFile: /usr/local/share/Waimea/menu
actionFile: /usr/local/share/Waimea/actions/action.click-to-focus

To:

styleFile: /home/pws/.waimea/styles/Default
menuFile: /home/pws/.waimea/menu
actionFile: home/pws/.waimea/actions/action.click-to-focus

Then I couldn't bring up the right-click menu on the desktop. Very wierd.

So I used the first example to get a menu. It's very minimal. I didn't see any way to select a different theme nor configure any of the settings although considering how new Waimea is I can understand that.

Those problems aside the bigest drawback for me was that iconified windows go nowhere, there's no management taskbar or anything. Iconify acts as a window shade and leaves your window on the desktop. In fact on some windows like XMMS it didn't do anything. Very messy for a guy like me who has tons of windows on a desktop.

On the plus side the default theme was really nice looking, nice and easy on the eyes blue pastelish color.

Mabye some potential but I much prefer Fluxbox right now.

Well I just switched from KDE to Blackbox and I want to thank the commitee, my parents, all the wonderful support staff, um God, that guy with the beard, the producers, and oh yeah the BB programmers.

Of course, the way I'm starting to look at things, KDE is kind of junky anyway, even if it looks nice. I like Blackbox (havent tried any of the clones) and will likely stick with it for a long while.

One quick question if anyone that knows has kept reading this far, I have a problem with watching slide shows and movies on my box because the monitor times out, and cuts off. How can I tell it that I will shut it off when I want it off?

I run xscreensaver and use the settings in it.

Is xscreensaver included with most distros or should I look for it while I am here with a high speed connection (but not my linux box)? Will be home tommorrow and can get at my linux box then.

Thanks for reply.
