What was the error message? Without knowing that and not having installed yahoo messenger myself it sounds like there could be an error with the installer.

How are you trying to install it where it could possibly be prompting you for a root password? I thought it came as a tarball?
For a .tar or .tar.gz file, you need to open a command prompt, type su to log in as root (which would then ask for the root password), un-tar the file, then run ./configure, make, make install.

BTW, the Linux version of Yahoo Messenger that Yahoo itself actually has for download is a total piece of crap - they put NO effort into it and basically the only reason they have it at all is just so they can say they have one for linux.
I normally suggest looking into installing Gaim instead, which has connectors for Yahoo.
