okay here is my question:
is slackware just referred to as"the distro you shouldn't start with" just because it is pretty much all shell.. or is it something else?
cause i am new/learning linux.. and my pc that i have it on(old as dirt) won't suport X anyways...
should i just install slackware??

Even if you can install X, Slack would be a good choice.

well you what they say:
if you can do it in slack you can do it anywhere
my very first linux installation was slackware and my latest install was yesterday on 486 with 12M ram including X and few other things.

Slack may be a bit harder because there are no Let-Me-Do-It-For-You-Wizars but that's how you'll learn. And Slack isn't impossible. It was my very first distro, I knew almost nothing about Linux when I got it but still I got it installed and configured. So, it's not impossible for a newbie.

Depends on how much time you want to put in. Slack was my 2nd distro(SuSe 6.4 was the first). Though it took more time to tweak everything, I learned alot more.

i don't think slackware would be that hard for a newbie to pick up ( after all i'm able to use it )
just to give you an example of what you're in for:
i had to edit my /etc/rc.d/rc.modules ( i think that's right.. been awhile ) to get my sound card to work.
it doesn't sound like much, but i had to spend some time figuring out that's what i had to edit.
slackware is a perfectly acceptable distro for any linux user. as long as you're willing to spend some time looking for the answer. of course IMO if you're using linux then you've already had to do this.
so in conclusion.....
go ahead. what's the worst thing that could happen......... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Slackware was the first distro I played with. I had a book on it and ultimately it wasn't that hard. If you're willing to read and play around, Slack is a great choice for a newbie. If you want the ease of Windows, go with something like Mandrake.
