I read somewhere that gaim is for gnome only. Is this correct or will it run on KDE?

Gaim is for any desktop/window manager enviroment, AFAIK! I haven't had any problems with it, using KDE, Fluxbox, and WindowMaker.

Yeah i am never in gnome or kde and it works just fine. I believe that there is a gnome focused version out there though that work best in gnome and buggy in other environments.

GAIM will run on your system perfectly fine no matter what windowing environment / desktop environment you're using as long as you have the Gnome/GTK+ libraries installed. That's all that's required, just the libraries. Just like I can run KDE applications in Enlightenment as long as I have the libraries installed. It has almost nothing to do with what window manager you're actually running.

Thanks for that. It was just that I have found that if a program starts with a G then it is probably Gnome only. Glad this one is not.

PS. This Fluxbox thing, is it a replacement for gnome and kde or just sits on top?

Well, in the Linux GUI world there are basically two types of things you deal with: window managers and desktop environments.

Windows managers just manage windows, where they go, what they look like, etc.

Desktop environments do the whole thing: Taskbars, docked apps, file browsers, everything.

Fluxbox is mostly a window manager with a LITTLE bit of desktop environment thrown in. As far as I know, you can actually use fluxbox as your window manager while you run Gnome or KDE as your desktop environment. But like I said, with Gnome and KDE apps, as long as you have the Gnome and KDE libraries installed, no matter what WM or DE you run, you can run Gnome and KDE apps.

So what you are saying is if I install both Gnome and KDE when I do my initial install I should be able to run apps for either DE under the other.

I installed Galeon and ran it under KDE and had nothing but problems although I did have Gnome installed.
