I am the type that will try anything with a computer. I am supprised mine still runs. I want to know if i can use my computer as a server. Now i have a web an a ftp with linux. AND THERE GREAT. What i am getting at is a internet server. Is there a program already out to support using a single pc as a server to serve up an ip address (or share one would be great) for internet use. I have a strong DSL connection and i want a way to share it with one other pc. But i dont want it to be networked with mine. It will have to connect from another location. any ideas? If i have to i will develope it myself but if there is some sorce code or something els to start with let me know. thanks

yes you can apache is likely the web server software you will want ro read up on and install.

mind you you can set up one of you boxes as a router.

Maybe i am lost but are you talking about the new virtual part of the apache server? I dont see it im my files or in add/remove programs. I may need to upgrade my software. can i just "upgrade" apache or do i have to download a new version and uninstall the old one. ???

hmm i dunno. is there any particular reason that you don't want the two computers connected? It is quite easy to set up a computer as a router in linux.

the scripts that i use may help you get on your way to setting up a remote router though.

Ok, the reason i cant just network them is the computers are not in the same place (building). then i would just network them and be done. I need a way to connect them by letting the other computer "dial" into my system and access my internet connection. Just like a isp. only not for the public just for the one computer. maybe i did not make it plain in the first post. (sorry) but thats the idea. I am not sure what a router does so ill do some reading on it. anything els you have would be nice. thanks

Ok, i didnt find much on this subject online, or in the forms. If you have some scripts for routing then may i see them?? it may help me to come up with something. I still think this can be done, even if i have to write a script for the cliant side (which i no dought will) it will be worth it. anybody els got a suggestion? Ill listen to almost anything at this point.
thanks.

found it. its in the default server package that comes with mandrake and redhat, dont know about the others. Its called dialin. lets you (or another computer) dialin to the server and the router lets them in to the internet connection. still reading but this will do what i wanted. just wanted to let you know.
