Hey all,
I am relatively new to Linux, and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to go about setting up a Linux system on a Windows 2000 network. So far, I have been able to set up the proxy and use the network connection to browse the internet. I am, however, unable to browse the Windows network and the network is unable to see me. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Have you set up samba? it should be in either /etc/smb.conf or /etc/samba/smb.conf depending on the distro you are using. How are you trying to browse the network neighborhood?

im a noob too, so i wont be too much help. ive recently have been trying to do the same thing and have had some success. what u need to do is get samba going. once this service/deamon is running windows can see linux boxes and vice versa. try looking here for an overview: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch01_01.html
once i had a vague idea, i started browsing thru the old posts of this forum and learned a whole lot. seems as if 90% of the topics on this networking linux forum are samba related. to start off with, look for topics that sound simplistic.

I can help you setup samba on RedHat, but I need to know distro version and the version of samba you have.
Also post your IP addresses and NetBIOS names of you W2K and Linux boxes
Thanks

I am currently using Mandrake 8.2 with the Samba distro that came with the Mandrake package. When I installed Mandrake, I made sure to include all the networking components, such as Samba.
My company wants to eventually move away from anything Microsoft. So we are converting over slowly so eventually it will be a complete Linux network. We also have customers that we will eventually convert to a Linux server with only Win workstations.
Being this is the first time I have really worked with Linux on a network, you will probably see many more posts from me. I do thank you all for the help you have given thus far.
