what distro are you using? I'm using Mandrake 7.1 and I have a Logitech FirstMouse+ PS/2. And it used to reconize the wheel until I got my switch, and I don't have that wheel anymore in linux. But my Win2k computer which is on the same switch (different port) works fine. I'm getting a mouseman Optical soon so I'll see if that works through the switch.
Btw when I do try to change the mouse in MouseDrake the mouse starts to act funny, like when I move gnome thinks that I clicked.. etc. Are you having this problem too?

Check the link in the /dev directory.
ls -l /dev/mouse
If you have a ps2 mouse it should point to /dev/psaux
If it doesn't do this. (as root)
rm /dev/mouse
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse
ls -l /dev/mouse
It should now point to /dev/psaux
restart X
good luck,
