Ever since i heard of Apt-Get i wanted to try it so i switched from Drake to debian.
Debian pure was pretty easy to install as i have installed text based slackware so that was fine. But after installed it lacked a personal touch.
Then i went to Storm Linux (hail) and it was simple to setup and has saved me so much time. It has the GUI tools if you need them which makes life easier when I am pissed off (90 % of the time).
I would recomend this distro to anyone. Its just as easy as drake to install and use.

Agreed!! I Love it so far. Only problem is getting apt-get to work better for me, but I think that's due to a short between keyboard and chair. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Stormix is very cool indeed! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/cool.gif

if I get some time, I'll come back here and post a short short synopsis of things you need to know about apt-get.

Q: How many existentialists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Two. One to screw it in and one to observe how the lightbulb itself symbolizes a single incandescent beacon of subjective reality in a netherworld of endless absurdity reaching out toward a maudlin cosmos of nothingness.

I've been wanting to move to Storm from Mandrake and Red Hat. I've tried it in the past and now would like to switch for good. Have any of you had any problems upgrading to KDE2? I've tried upgrading to KDE2 on my Red Hat box and had nothing but problems.
Thanks.

No, actually that went absolutely smoothly!
apt-get update
apt-get install kdebase (you could do apt-get install task-koffice if you want all that stuff too -- it'll grab as much of the kde2 stuff you need for kde2, koffice, konqueror, etc...)
Then...
cd /etc/gdm/Sessions
ln Debian kde2
That will add kde2 to your login screen to select if you wish (that is, if you're using gdm which is likely if you're using Hail -- comes with helix gnome).
There ya go!

I had kde installed when I installed hail but when I put in kde2, the kde selection on the login screen balked... so I made the link as I described above and now it works like a charm!

Hey thanks for the tip Fuzzy!! Kde2 installed no prob. Did the #cd /etc/gdm/Sessions thing and voila!
KDE2! And without the stupid cartoon splash screen that pops up default with Mandrake 7.2. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I don't use KDE much at all but I just learned something so that's a good thing!
Also , in order to get KDE2 I had to add a line to my sources.list and after all the trouble I been having with apt-get...IT WORKED!!

Great! What was the issue with your sources.list? I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the problem was with that!

I don't know what the problem is...I just typed in a new source line from an ftp site with .deb packages , ran apt-get update....it hung a while waiting for update info from the new source and bang! done.
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I guess I'll just keep hunting down source links one by one an adding them till my sources.list is up to snuff.
Apt-get & Alien, Don't leave home without em! hehe

I tried to install Debian on my 486 Compac Aero with 8mb ram. All went well (floppy install) untill after the driver stage. Then, to my astonishment, it could no longer read the floppy (external PCMCIA). I can't use a network install because I only have one slot.
Is stormix my answer? Will it work on my little laptop? I need a portable showpiece so I can praise Linux everywhere I go.

I would look at the STORMIX (http://www.stormix.com) site and see. I've heard some things about a few challenges getting it on laptop BUT I also know of many people who DO run it just fine on a laptop. So check out their site and look at their storm-users-maillist archives to see if any potential problems/fixes will suit your concerns.

I know.......that splash screen in Mandrake 7.2 is terrible. Have you tried Gnome in Mandrake, yet? There's another lovely splash screen there, too.
I know that Mandrake is really working hard at bringing in new users, but.......
